This original painting was hand drawn by renowned herpetological artist / illustrator Marty Capron of Kansas. It was presented to Dr. H. Bernard Bechtel during a tribute to him at the 26th Annual All-Florida Herpetology Event in Gainesville, Florida over April 5 - 6, 2003. The theme of the painting was planned months in advance as a surprise to honor him as both a long-standing supporter of the conference over the years, and, of course, to recognize his significant contribution to herpetology and herpetoculture.
The date August 31, 1961 is when the very first amelanistic (red albino) corn snakes hatched in captivity from Bern's mating of two normal corns heterozygous for amelanism that he produced a couple years earlier. The 1/4 albino babies in the clutch were just as he predicted.
